Welcome to our new series, The People of Primary Care: the human stories behind the healthcare you receive at your doctor’s office or healthcare hub.

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Sharon Tanyi and I’m a Clinical Receptionist.

What is the role of a Clinical Receptionist?

A Clinical Receptionist is the first point of contact for the patients. The role of a Clinical Receptionist is to provide exceptional customer service to patients, the friendly voice answering the phone, scheduling, communication with providers and patients. We basically keep everything running smoothly for the office, so the providers can take care of their patients. We do wear many hats!

What brought you to this profession?

I went to school to be a Medical Receptionist and have worked as a dental receptionist for many years. I am very grateful to have found the Hamilton Family Health Team; I love working here, staff are wonderful and supportive! I have a passion for people, I love meeting new people and love speaking with people and providing a good service to those we serve. I am definitely known to be a chatter box!

Why primary care?

The dental field was moving in a direction that no longer aligned with my own values, so I felt a change was in order. I came across the Hamilton Family Health Team; I felt their vision aligned with my values. I was right! I love working for the organization and really enjoy the great people who work here.

What brings you joy in this role?

I enjoy the moments when you feel you have made a difference in someone’s day! You never know what patients are dealing with in their lives. A bit of kindness, a smile, holding a door open for someone, goes a long way. A compliment from a patient is what keeps you going!

Where can we find you when you’re not in the office?

When I am not in the office, I am often walking, playing or cuddling with our golden doodle Maple, or spending time with our 3 grandchildren. It definitely keeps me busy!

What’s something your colleagues or patients would be surprised to learn about you?

I love bird watching…I don’t share that with many people. Generally, love the outdoors & being in nature!
