Welcome to our new series, The People of Primary Care: the human stories behind the healthcare you receive at your doctor’s office or healthcare hub.

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Maxwell Beaudoin and I’m a Mental Health Nurse.

What is a Mental Health Nurse?

As a mental health nurse, I support patients with mental health conditions through assessment, psychoeducation and monitoring well-being. I build trusting relationships with patients to support recovery and self-management. Additionally, I collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver coordinated and person-centered care.

What brought you to this profession?

Nursing offers a unique opportunity to combine science with meaningful human connection, which has always inspired me to pursue this career. I enjoy building relationships with people and being able to support them during challenging times.

What brings you joy in your role?

I find genuine joy and pride in supporting patients with their mental health concerns. I feel proud meeting people where they are and enjoy sharing meaningful, human moments that help them feel understood and supported.

How does working in an interprofessional primary care team support the work you do?

Collaborating with an interprofessional team strengthens the delivery of timely, patient‑centred care by addressing the full picture of an individual’s health and drawing on a broad range of expertise. The support of both clinical and non‑clinical team members is essential in providing high‑quality, compassionate care.

What’s something patients might be surprised to learn about mental health nursing?

Patients are often surprised to learn that my role can support a wide range of mental health concerns, and that it is never too late to explore oneself, including thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Many are also pleasantly surprised by the broadness of support available through their family doctor’s practice and the HFHT.

Where can we find you if you are not in the office?

You can find me travelling, surfing or snowboarding outside of the office. I love the thrill of carving down a hill on a snowboard.

I also enjoy creating music and engaging with the local arts community.
