International Day of the Midwife, held annually on May 5, is meant to bring global attention to the profession, encouraging healthcare systems around the world to embed midwives in their care teams. This year’s theme is “One Million More Midwives”, which is the estimated workforce needed globally to meet essential health needs. Behind that number are real people, real communities, and real opportunities to transform care.
Primary care midwives provide essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn care. They support women and gender diverse people before, during and after birth. They provide contraception, early loss management, breastfeeding support, and ongoing care. The targeted priority population are people in the East End of Hamilton, and those with no OHIP coverage. Patients can self refer, or be referred by their primary care provider.
Today and every day, we thank the Midwives who are part of the Hamilton Family Health Team team for the care they provide, from preconception to reproductive health questions, breastfeeding support and ongoing care. Your commitment to informed choice, continuity and respectful care supports people to feel safe, heard and respected at every step in their reproductive health.
