On May 23, we held our second Just Walk event, powered by Walk with a Doc at Bayfront Park—a free, one-hour walking program designed to bring the community together while promoting better health.
Each Just Walk session features a brief presentation on a different health topic, led by a local healthcare provider such as a physiotherapist, family doctor, registered dietitian, mental health counsellor, or other provider.
Veronica Wong, Physiotherapist, shared four key takeaways:
1. You’re Not the Only One
- Up to 1 in 2 people assigned female at birth (AFAB) experience urinary leakage.
- Up to 1 in 3 people may still have leakage a year after prostate removal surgery.
2. The Pelvic Floor Plays a Big Role
- These muscles help control urine flow—especially when there’s extra pressure, like during a cough, sneeze, or jump.
3. Training Helps
- A 3–6 month pelvic floor muscle training program can significantly reduce or even stop leakage altogether.
4. Get Support If You Need It
- A pelvic health physiotherapist can check whether you’re engaging the right muscles and create a customized training plan for you.
- If Kegels haven’t worked, you may have a tightness or coordination issue rather than weakness, and specialized guidance can help.
Following the talk, participants enjoyed a scenic walk around Bayfront Park, connecting with the lead healthcare provider, meeting new people, and exploring the beautiful Hamilton waterfront, at their own pace.
