Celebrating Social Work Week and National Social Work Month 2026

At the Hamilton Family Health Team (HFHT), social workers play essential roles across mental health, social care, and leadership. They support patients through counselling, help individuals navigate complex social systems, and strengthen team‑based primary care through collaboration with physicians, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers.

HFHT social workers bring empathy, expertise, and partnership to life every day. Their work helps ensure that patients receive care that is not only clinically sound but also compassionate, accessible, and responsive to the realities of daily life.

We want to thank our Social Workers in all areas of the organization for the important work they do.

What is Social Work Week and National Social Work Month?

March (2026) is a time to recognize the essential contributions of social workers across Ontario and Canada. Ontario Social Work Week (March 2–8) and National Social Work Month (March 2026) highlight the profession’s deep commitment to supporting individuals, families, and communities through compassionate, evidence‑informed care.

During this time, there are opportunities to honour a profession rooted in human dignity, human rights, and social justice. In honour of National Social Work Month, the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) “invites affirmation of the profession’s enduring commitment to human dignity, human rights and social justice.”

This year, the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) has chosen to identify three interconnected strengths that define social work, “empathy, expertise and partnership in action.”

Social workers demonstrate these strengths in clinical practice roles, policy roles, leadership roles as well as through “ethical standards, public accountability and educational foundations” within the profession.

What is the role of social workers in Ontario and across Canada?

Social workers are the largest group of mental health professionals in both Ontario and Canada. Their work spans a wide range of settings, but a shared principle unites them: seeing patients as partners and as experts in their own lives.
