Mental Health Program
Who We Are
Many people will experience a mental health-related problem or mental illness at some point in their lives. The HFHT Mental Health Program brings mental health services into the offices of participating family doctors in Hamilton, Ontario. Family doctors, mental health counsellors and psychiatrists work together to help individuals, couples, and families with mental health-related problems such as:
- depression
- stress/anxiety
- marital/relationship problems
- parenting issues
- bereavement
- substance use problems
- work-related or school-related problems
Mental health services are available to people of all ages, including children, teens, adults and seniors.
The program also offers counsellor-led groups for problems such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem difficulties, stress management, parenting issues and chronic pain.
The Mental Health Program has two pilot projects underway: Child & Youth Mental Health and Substance Use/Addictions.
The Child & Youth Mental Health Pilot will provide mental health services to children and youth (aged 0-18) and their families in their family doctor’s office. The goal of the pilot is to promote healthy development of all children and youth. The program will offer a variety of resources, services and programs to all Hamilton Family Health Team practices. In addition, six pilot locations will have access to specialized child and youth mental health counsellors.
The Substance Use/Addictions Pilot will look at how best to detect and treat patients with problems related to their use of substances such as alcohol and drugs. The pilot will involve providing educational materials and other resources, screening and access to a specialized substance use counsellor.
